Small, Colorfull and Elegance, Coleus........


Hybrid Coleus  
Coleus  is an annual plant species originating from tropical areas in Africa, Asia, Australia, East Indian, Malay and Philippine Islands. This plant is known as Coleus, a name taken from the previous classification is divided into two: who are members of Solenostemon or another type of Plectranthus sp.

Coleus leaves have a variety of colors and shapes, these plants are relatively cheap price. Coleus is also easy to maintain. These plants can be propagated by seed or by stem cuttings.

This plant has a type of rapid growth so as to produce shrubs, pruning should be done regularly. This plant is too high when the trunk is easy to break and less good shape.

These plants can grow well in moist soil and have good drainage. Height can reach 0.5-1 meters, although there also has a height of 2 m. Coleus is resistant to heat, but in place of sub-tropical prefer the shade.

One of the diseases that can attack the Coleus is fluffy fungus. This fungus appears on the leaves makes the plant look dirty because its color is brown. These organisms are called Peronospora sp. and also can cause leaf curl and rotate. Sometimes symptoms are not found in the leaves so the disease is difficult to control. Another is to place impatiens disease virus that causes necrotic spots on leaves brown or yellow, rings, rods discoloration black or brown, and brown leaf veins, ultimately resulting in plant death. The disease is spread by insects called thrips that carry the virus from infected plants to uninfected plants.

There are several types of Coleus such as: 

 1.       Coleus blumei (Solenostemon scutellarioides), 1-2 foot high plants have various varieties.  Sabre variety has a of dwarf trees, The Chief, leaves wrinkled, leaf edges frayed Fire Bird, Butterfly leaves have wavy edges. Coleus leaves do not have a base color, the average leaf consists of a variety of mixed colors, although there also have a single color such as Golden Bedder (yellow), Volcano (dark red). While that has mixed colors such as Scarlet Poncho, Milky Way and Fashion Parade.
2.    Coleus  verschaffelti, has a large leaf size and color vary. 
3.   Solenostemon autranii (Briq.) J. K. Morton
4.   Solenostemon rotundifolius (Poiret) J. K. Morton
5.  Solenostemon shirensis (Gürke) Codd
6.   Solenostemon pumilus

Coleus blumei (Solenostemon scutellarioides) has a relaxing effect and a very mild hallucinogen when consumed. But this plant has been used by the Mazatec Indians of southern Mexico that have been consuming this plant for many years to treat alter minds effect.

Some tips for Coleus plants  can grow and develop properly is to try Coleus grows in the warm air at a temperature of at least 50 F, with an adequate supply of light and keep the planting medium moist.
